Proposed L.A.D.S. Trip 2016

Thursday 14th July 7pm The West Lancashire Light Railway

A 'behind the scenes' guided tour of the sheds and workshops at the West Lancashire Light Railway located adjacent to Alty's on Station Road, Hesketh Bank, PR4 6SP

The volunteers at the WLLR have kindly offered to host a visit from the LADS and open up the workshops for an informal viewing of not only the restored exhibits but also the many steam, diesel and electric projects underway; many of which were originally employed locally for example working at Burscough Brick & Tile or removing sand for Pilkingtons.

One of the 'Star' exhibits is Joffre. 'Joffre' is the oldest known surviving member of a class of 70 locomotives built by the Stoke-on-Trent firm Kerr Stuart in 1915. They were ordered by the French Military for the first World War, hauling supplies and troops on the many narrow gauge railways that criss crossed the battle fields of Northern France. Joffre has just returned back to Hesketh Bank after visiting the Somme for the recent centenary commemorations. The workshops house a plethora of projects in various states of disrepair where volunteers painstakingly work from original drawings to repair or remake the components necessary for restoration and are happy to discuss both the history of the engines and the challenges of restoration.

Minimum number: None
Cost: Donations to WLLR

Wednesday 25th May 2016 - The National Memorial Arboretum

Natiional Memorial Arboretum at LichfieldThe Arboretum is an evolving, maturing woodland landscape featuring 30,000 trees and a vast collection of memorials.

The 150-acre site is a living, growing tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our country.

Unfortuantly, the Armed Forces Memorial will be closed to the public whilst improvements are underway but a full itinery for the day is being finalised and it promises to be a memorable day nontheless.

The proposal is to have a later start time than is usual to allow members to tend to essential tasks. The intention is to arrive around 1pm and partake of the 'Gentlemans' Afternoon Ale and Train tour of the Aboretum which caters for all mobility levels. Any suggestions are very welcome.

Minimum number: 20

Thursday 15th September 2016 - APF Show, Ragley Hall
APF Show at Ragley HallThe UKs biggest forestry exhibition, the Confor APF Show is a massive event spread over the grounds of Ragley Hall.

With working demonstrations of the weird and wonderful harvesters, forwaders, massive drum chippers as well as the world 25m pole climbing and the european chainsaw carving championships it is a packed day out.

Together with the more sedate traditional woodland crafts on show it will be a day of interest to both big kit fanatics and those just cutting a bit of firewood for their log burner.

Please leave your credit card at home if easily tempted.

Maximum Cost: Coach £25 + Entry £20

UPDATE APRIL 2016: DUE TO INSUFFICIENT NUMBERS THIS TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Members who wish to make the trip using their own transport should contact the Chairman who will co-ordinate an informal visit.

Booking for the above trips is open now. If the minimum numbers required to warrant booking the coach are not achieved by end March 2016 then the trip will be cancelled and deposits returned at the April 6th LADS meeting (AGM).

To avoid the costs of last minute 'no show' being unfairly loaded onto the remaining attendees, a deposit to cover the fixed costs of the coach will be required when making a booking. This will only be refundable if the trip is cancelled.

Should we achieve more travelling than the minimum, the benefit of the reduced cost of the coach per head and any group discounts will be shared out amongst all attendees.

Please contact Mark (07834 324080) for more information.
